When I started working the telecommunications industry in 1975 we had a good
portion of Engineers who started as Hams and, like me, turned their
avocation into their vocation.
I started off as a design engineer but as the speed of the equipment
advanced we purchased our equipment and became system engineers.
With the advent of the microprocessors design morphed from hardware to
software.
I'm still in the industry but it is a different world. Most new graduates
aren't even aware of Amateur Radio is still active except if they have an
older relative or neighbor in the hobby.
The only new graduates who did any hardware experimentation or know anything
about RF come from India.
