[ARC5] UPS Transformers

That is an interesting idea to take two discarded UPS units transformers and hook them LV side back to back to make a isolation transformer. I just obtained an especially nice and husky example of such a transformer as a result of salvaging a dead UPS that someone had set atop the airport dumpster. And it was dead dead as in having the electrical characteristics of a pine 2X4, not just a dead battery.

I bought a Trip Lite IS800 isolation transformer at the last Melbourne hamfest and had to replace the line cord, which was missing the ground lug. I also went inside it and removed the connection between one side of the output and the case, which is recommended if you plan to connect it to other equipment where line cord polarities may get reversed. I paid $5.00 for IS800 and it seems to work fine so I think it was a good deal.

But if I need an isolation transformer where space it is not issue but additional financial outlays are to be avoided I will use that idea. Thanks!
