I am involved with a museum of radio and radio broadcasting. We have a lot
of old radios from the 20's and 30's. Some of these radios have hi Z audio
transformers wound with very fine wire. The failure rate after 90 years is
a problem. They go open. Once and a while the break is at the terminals
but usually it is not. Rewinding is a really tough proposition as the
force of re-winding vs the force of breaking is not far apart....and there
are LOTS of turns. No easy solutions. We often use good transformers from
junker radios even if they are not exactly correct for the model.
