Ken,
As someone who has been there and done (tried?) that, let me relate the
following. The cords within the HB-7 headband were installed before the
outer stitching took place. In extremely rare cases have I been able to
replace the cord within the leather, itself. The later HS-33's, as used
by the USAF in the 60's, that had plastic headbands, were doable.
However, I personally, have not seen the cord sets as a stand-alone item
for a very long time. I believe these were replacements for helmets or
maybe those Navy cloth head-caps? They are not listed as a replaceable
part in any TM or T.O I have that talks about HS-33/HS-23 headphones and
related interphone systems. Most of the HB-7s I have tried to remove
the cord has been unsuccessful as the cord had swollen or the leather
has shrunk making it an extremely tight fit. I was fortunate a few
years ago to find a larder of new but stripped HB-7s at Bananofsky's
(Barans Surplus) place. There were, for a while, Japanese copies of the
HB-7 around. They are identifiable as the element retaining pins are
larger that those actually on ANB and R-14 elements. One has to
slightly ream out the tiny holes on the element(s). And... as you point
out, working with tinsel cord is a chore. I have been able to remove
and clean out the end caps that mate with the elements and re-use the
piercing feature of each on the tinsel cord ends. There's generally
enough service loop left to do this. Soldering is... difficult? The
one thing I really hate to see (but often the only remedy) is to re-wire
with zip cord. They work but look punky...! At least PL-54s, et al,
and JK-26s are still available.
All this probably won't help you one whit, but info is at least good for
the archives...hi!!
