I find that hard to believe. A lot of hams back then, myself included, could
not afford anything other than surplus. Modifying them from a technical
point of view was not a great challenge, and some only needed minimal mods.
If you got frustrated with the mod, you still did not have enough money to

Many of the early ARC-5 modification articles were sponsored by the big name
ham radio companies. They knew that radical modifications of cheap war
surplus gear would usually result in frustration with many modifiers giving
up and buying their products. Destruction sponsored by the big companies.
And CQ magazine was complicit in that.
