  Hello List-readers,
  Tom referred to ''step drill bit".  These are also known as stage
  drills, and are ideal for drilling holes in aluminium, diecast
  muck-metal and so on.
  See eBay items 171067157128, 291347176512, 361041784417 for examples.

  I have used these for many years in hand-drills and a drill press.
  Set the drill speed to low RPM, let the drill do the work (don't press
  hard) and you'll get good results.
  Stage drills do not drill stainless easily unless you can get the
  speed REALLY low, eg 25 to 50 RPM.
  Use a lubricant with stainless.  (or buy a hole-saw with tungsten
  tips.)
