The original (new) unpainted WECo and other manufactured SCR-274-N 
components were not shiny.  The individual aluminum parts were clear matte anodized. 
 The most that I would do would be soap and water and stiff non-matallic 
brushes.  Some of the WW-II vintage unpainted aluminum components (Cannon 
K-Series and some P-Series connectors for example) were hard coat anodized, 
which yields a dark gray.  But I don't recall ever seeing this finish on Command 
Set parts.  Mostly Navy aircraft sets.
