>I was under the impression that the 12SF7 was never used in the Army

True. It was not used in the RAT, RAT-1, RAV, ARA, or SCR-274-N.

>A friend recently bought what was purported to be a modified BC-453B, yet
>today he told me that there is a 12SK7 in the socket labeled 12SF7.

Weird. There's something irregular.

>If he is correct, I suspect that he has an R-23/ARC-5 with a BC-453 outer
>case on it.

One may very plainly determine if a receiver is a R-23* or R-24/ARC-5 from across a large room...ONLY the R-23* or R-24 have the loop antenna posts and LOOP-ANT switch on the front panel (except for the RAV CBY-46102 beacon band and CBY-46103 BC band receivers that likely none of us have ever seen or ever will see.)
