[ARC5] Transmitter capacitors

Each ARC-5 transmitter has two large variable caps
coupled together. You know the ones; they tune the
PA tank and VFO.
On the side of each capacitor is a machined plate
that is bolted to the studs through which the worm
drives pass.
What is the function of the plates? They seem to do
nothing more than add strengthening of the studs,
but those studs are so firmly attached that it's hard
to think of them breaking away. Matter of fact, I think
I've never seen ones broken off.
