Yes, the "damp chaser", in the SX-111, has to be activated, for several hours, before making any meaningful stability tests.  Best to plug it in for 24-hours and then do the testing.
In the "real world", most operators left the unit plugged in all the time and the unit reached temperature and stayed there. Glen, K9STH Website: http://k9sth.net

Bob,

As things would happen, I posted an issue with my SX-111 on the 
Hallicrafters group.  Same issue as you, I was getting 8-10 kHz 
drift/hr, too.  It does settle down after a couple of hours.. The 
internal heater is working, it appears.  I now understand this is a 
common thread in SX-111 receivers.
