Some time back someone recommended "Renaissance Wax" for restoring the luster of black wrinkle paint finishes.  You can buy it on ebay and presumably other places, although I have no experience with it myself.

Also, I had a problem with the plastic nameplate of a BC-620-F looking cloudy and fixed that with Marvel Mystery Oil.

It is true that WD-40 was developed as a water displacing coating and cleaner for Atlas missiles and not as a lubricant.
