I did a little research on this. I believe that the first wrinkle
paint was made by a company with a name like Art Finishes (doesn't look
right) and was applied in two layers. There is another finish called
"crackle" which is the finish General Radio used for many years. It
looks like dried mud. This was also a two coat process where the under
coat was allowed to shrink. It was an expensive process and not too
widely used. It was also used on the Hallicrafters SX-28 and maybe some
other H equipment.
Some years ago I refinished some cabinets with Krylon spray
wrinkle black. I found both application temperature and thickness
critical. I got pretty good results by air drying for half an hour or
so and then oven drying at about 150F for an hour or more. I think the
rate of drying affects the texture of the wrinkles, hotter gives coarser
wrinkles. I have yet to find formulas for anything like the original
paint but know I've seen it in print somewhere.
