      There is a do-not-call list in the US but it doesn't work very 
well.  During elections I get constant calls promoting one or another 
candidate.   I have both a land phone and a cell phone.  My land phone 
is on an answering machine for call screening all the time.  Unless I am 
expecting a call I usually do not pick up until I know who it is.  Some 
phones have a call identifier that tells you who is calling but they are 
not universal.   If you are of a certain age you consider a ringing 
phone urgent.  Its a hard habit to break.  At least in this country if 
you are in a store at the counter and the phone rings, guess what gets 
immediate attention... you, a real live person, or the monster with the 
bell?   I think the idea is that if you start to walk out they can stop 
you but they usually don't.   I have been in stores where I had to call 
on my cell phone to get attended by the clerk behind the counter.   The 
best trick for that was something I saw a million years ago.  A very 
good looking woman, very good looking, was in a drug store and couldn't 
get any attention at the counter.  This was when we still had old 
fashioned cash registers.  She reached around and pushed the No Sale 
button on the register, which went Ka Ching, someone beat it out there 
triple time.  She was so stunning she got away with it.
