Actually, Brian, what has happened is that the NEW download of the free 
version of Malwarebytes you installed found the OLD installation, and used 
the date you installed that to determine whether or not you had already used 
it.

The free versions of most software have this "feature".

There are ways to defeat this, but it involves doing some judicious searching 
and the process is not trivial for most "casual" computer users.

The "bought" version of Malwarebytes is not all that expensive, and using 
that seems to reset that date issue so that once your "bought" version has 
expired, you can then download and use the free version again, until it "runs 
out", when you have to go through the original process again.

I highly recommend the free version of AVG (which really IS free) for most 
casual users. I use both the "bought" version (on our main computer) and the 
free version on others, and have had unusually good luck with it.
