I used adwcleaner on a friend's PC that was infected with something
that redirected the search engine to the adware site.  I used it after
doing a web search on how to remove that particular malware, and
several people recommended it.  It did the job.

There's also a scanner/cleaner called malwarebytes that seems to be
highly regarded.  You get a free trial, and then it's a paid subscription
if you want to keep using it.
