    Well, as happens to me all too often I read the 
instruction book after posting and discovered that all I 
guessed at is in it. What I have is TO 12R2-35CR274-2 from 
BAMA.
    The gain control is explained on p.23, paragraph 13, the 
bias arrangement on p.25, paragraph 14. Sometimes I just try 
to figure out how things work but its all in the handbook.
    BTW, IMO this is a pretty well written book.  Its a late 
one but I suspect that much of the text is from older 
editions.
