I've heard that a number of times, but I'm not sure where that 
misapprehension originated.  The USAAF in the Pacific used it 
extensively in a variety of aircraft, including the B-29, for the same 
reason the Navy did - it got planes back to base.  YE and YG 
transmitters were set up at fixed airfields for both Army and Navy use.  
If you'll go to http://aafradio.org/NASM/RHAntennas.htm you'll see the 
AN/ARR-1 antenna on the starboard side of the B-29.
