I understand completely, Robert.
Your are right about what the books say.
I do, however, have several of each type.
The so-called "VT-25" tubes are physically identical
to the "801s" and operate at the same neutralization
settings and power out. The "VT-25A" tubes are physically
very different from the "801-VT25", neutralizing differently
and delivering more power. These differences are consistant.
This is why I theorize that the tube makers tried to
cut costs by using their old "801" tooling to produce
tubes they labeled "VT-25" but which were in fact, 801s.
The books do say one thing, but opertion
in the equipment says another.
I do welcome other theories to explain this.
