Floyd.
I don't see anyone feuding here, but giving input about what was historically correct. I for one was not aware that there were so many variations and find it to be useful, albeit minute detail, information to know when purchasing one of these units. After all, that is the purpose of the list, to share information...
That being said, I am the owner of three severely bastardized transmitters that I have to just about re-manufacture. I will use original parts as much as they are available in my inventory, but if push comes to shove, I will use whatever works  at this point.
I find the thread informative as my search for a more pristine version goes on. This helps to define "pristine".

My two cents. I am not going to compound the war on paint by shooting
contract numbers back and forth and arguing back and forth. I am growing
tired of this thread. I will only say this. For dumb asses like myself
growing up in the 1950s I know ARC5 radios as black radios and SCR-274N
radios as only aluminum finish with no paint at all. I have a complete
SCR-274-N with no black paint.

Thank God I did not ever run across any black bottoms with aluminum tops. I
really would have been confused as a kid.

I want to tell a short story. I have a British Armored Fighting Vehicle
called a Ferret Mk2/4. It is kind of like a small two man Tank with 4
wheels. I joined a Ferret Forum/List on yahoo.com before it became it became
yahoogroups.com. There was an immediate war going on between the "Purist"
and "None Purist". I was a normal None Purist person. A Purist is one that
if their Ferret lost a bolt or one broke off they would have to order a
Ferret Bolt from a Ferret Supplier in England and have it shipped to them.
Me being a None Purist would just go to the local hardware store and buy
one. Either way the paint covered either one and no one could then tell the
difference, but the purist would always say that they knew the difference.
One day I had to remove a cover to access something for maintenance. A bolt
was rusted and broke off. It was hell to drill out and I got upset and did
sacrilege. I removed every bolt that I could find and replaced them all with
Stainless Steel Bolts. I painted over them and was happy. Then I made the
mistake of telling them on the Ferret List. I received so much hell that I
created my own Ferret List. So people that were Purist had their List and
the None Purist have theirs if they want it.

My point is Should I search to see if there is a SCR-274-N List or a ARC5
Paint or ARC5 No Paint List or heaven forbid a SCR-274-N Half Breed Paint
List? All this reminds me of the early Star Trek program where there was a
civil war on another planet. People were half white and half black. They
were at war because half of them were black on the opposite side.
