The Navy had two numbers either of which may be found on what otherwise
look like PL-54, PL-55, etc. One is a five-digit number which is the Navy Type
Number. The other is an NAF number usually found on stuff ordered by the
brown shoes.
All of the WW-II and earlier numbers began changing around 1948 when the
Army and Navy were going through a fit of converting everything over to the AN
system. So PL-55 became PJ-055B (there was no Red), PL-54 became PJ-054B,
PL-354 became PJ-054R, etc. Most of the rest of the renomenclatured plugs
didn't have a suffix color letter. The only difference between the old and
the new was the number. So they are all interchangable (unless you encounter
a stitch nazi).
H-16/U is a renomenclatured HS-23 and has a PJ-054B plug on about a 12"
cord. HS-16 had pin plugs. Although the Navy had some sets through the War
that still used pin plugs for audio, the only usage I know of for HS-16 was
with code practice sets and maybe some Morale receivers.
