For LOCAL control applications for our favorite receivers, I have found that
1/4" hard-BRASS tubing makes extremely good spline-connectors.
I cut a piece about 7/8" long, and then cut two slots, about 1/4" long in the
end that will go over the spline using a thin cut-off wheel in my Dremel tool.
Then I install a good knob with a brass insert on the other end, and tap the
combo onto the spline with a ball-pein hammer. I get the knobs from Radio
Shack.
Since the spline is almost exactly 1/4" in diameter, the 1/4" diameter brass
tubing must expand a little to fit over it. Since the hard-brass is quite
"springy", it grips tightly and doesn't work loose over time.
Once centered up, this makes an extremely reliable, tight, and completely
back-lash free connection.
These work much better than the original, miliary tuning-keys or the military
tuning knobs, which both exhibit noticeable and very annoying backlash.
