Hook a longwire up to it and plug in the phones and you can hear lots of stuff on a good night.

It would be possible. The BC-221 puts out a decent signal.
BTW, the BC-221 looks roughly like a British WS-18 at a quick glance from
 distance. The WS-18 is not as common though.

 I have heard that B17 radio ops would sometimes tap the HF antenna lead on
 a BC-221 output terminal to send CW to the tower on final or to close in
 other aircraft if their other HF radio transmitters were OOC.
