the fact that you need to understand CAN bus programing to do anything original with current cars is going to move back yard tinkers from the grease monkey to the computer hacker communities.

I see a resurgence in interest, actually. FSAE events are spreading like crazy, and there are more and more Automotive Engineering programs at colleges. 

No question it's different. Much more complex now. You can't just take an electric power train and drop it into an old clunker so being a simple greaser won't get you far today. Now you're talking CAN bus programming and understanding of the systems to a much greater degree. 

The stream of applicants I see are pretty impressive and I'm in an automotive company.
