I routinely use the "Muffler and Exhaust System" black wrinkle paint which I
get from any of several local auto parts stores. I don't know who makes it
and I don't much care as long as it works.

I have had very good luck with it...as long as it is painted only on a horizontal
surface, thickly, then "encouraged" to wrinkle more quickly and evenly with a
heat gun of some type, then left untouched to properly harden for at least 3
days, sometimes longer.

You can tell when it is about hardened enough when you can no longer smell
it.

If I use only one coat, it wrinkles quite well, but the wrinkles are a bit smaller
than ARC's original.

If I want "thicker" wrinkles, I use more than one coat, letting the stuff set up a
tiny bit between coats, but before it begins to wrinkle.

You can tell when it is about the right time to give it another coat when you
see the previous coat get just a little bit dull.

After it has hardened, it is at least as tough as the original paint.

I also usually "wash" the aluminum I am going to paint with vinegar, then
water, drying thoroughly afterwards, and I make certain I don't touch the
clean surface either.

YMMV.
