I remember carbon tet fire extinguishers. Got a blob on your dress honey? Here. Have at it dear. It disappeared as an easily available ‘off the shelf consumer product’ about the time I entered 1st grade as I recall. Thems was the days my friends. BTW the carbon tet extinguishers in the (auto repair) shop were replaced with big ol’ CO2 jobbies. I always loved pulling the trigger on those.

When I was a technician in the telecommunications industry in the late
1960's we used carbon tetrachloride to clean switch and relay contacts.
This was a liquid that came in small bottles. We poured it on rags and
brushes with bare fingers and no breathing protection.
Within a few years carbon tet was declared highly toxic and promptly
dropped from use. I never heard of any study into long term effects or
follow up on those who had used it.
