Usually, the transmitters and the receivers were on quite different 
frequencies. Thus the need for a sidetone when on CW. There really was no 
"spotting" as we hams use the term.

The BC-221 or the LM frequency meters were always included on every 
bomber or large-ish Navy airplane.
