Well, your T-17 mystery is sol-vid, as /Inspector Clouseau/ would say.
The thing is, there are T-17's.. and then there are T-17's. I have no
less than 10-15 T-17 mics in various states of usefulness. I have one,
early straight T-17 that has amazing output, to this day. Others vary
from so-so, to genuinely usable, to all-but-dead. The ones that
surprise me are the later M-15/UR mics, some from the 60's and 70's that
replaced the T-17's. RS-38-type carbon mics have also been a general
disappointment. Again, a few are OK and a few are not. That one T-17 I
have beats all odds. That said, I do have a query for the interested
group. Why is it that some MIL radios that utilize single-button carbon
mics won't accept carbon-compatible mics, such as the Electro-Voice
FAA-approved mics. The GRC-9 is the one I have the most issues with.
Bias polarity, etc. is not an issue. Is is RF feedback?
