Prior to the HT-32 and 37 the VFO's were all external small boxes that had
decent mechanical stability. This coincided with the SX-101 family and the
SX-115/117 which offered equivalent stability.
Even so my HT-18 required some TC to work, to my satisfaction, with the big
HT-9.
It was also much easier to do that with a hamband only RX as compared to the
tin foil construction of the SX-100.
