[ARC5] Video discussing the loss of the Lady Be Good

Right on! We used to call it "hunting". The needle swings back and forth as the receiver moves the loop trying to find the signal in the noise. This is where you switch from ADF to MDF. AVC turned off and loop moved manually while listening with the phones. Did it many times while transiting across the Gulf of Mexico to various Caribbean islands.

In a standard ADF system, the main indication of low signal is the
instability of the needle. If the needle moves a lot that is a good sign of
low SNR.

I don't know what the Lady Be Good had in the way of radio compass
equipment, but the B-24N training manual says for the SCR-269 system
operation as a homing compass:
"Since a pronounced AVC action may be present when operating the radio
compass on "COMP," aural indications received on this position should not be
used when homing on a radio range station."
