I a standard ADF system, the main indication of low signal is the
instability of the needle.  If the needle moves a lot that is a good sign of
low SNR.

I don't know what the Lady Be Good had in the way of radio compass
equipment, but the B-24N training manual says for the SCR-269 system
operation as a homing compass:

"Since a pronounced AVC action may be present when operating the radio
compass on "COMP," aural indications received on this position should not be
used when homing on a radio range station."
