Hi, Wayne!
Similar to your idea for reinforcing the tubing, I was mulling over Dennis' (AE6C) idea of wedging a bit of plastic dowel into the mouth of the collar with a central hole to support the tubing. Held at one end by the spline, supported near the knob by the dowel, it seems like the tubing might be a bit more robust. But there is an experimental question of how tight to make the fit through the dowel for good support but no objectionable friction in tuning.

Here is an idea that may improve yours, Ken:
Take a piece of the 1/4 in brass tubing, slot it as you describe, and slide it
over the ARC-5 spline..
Then take a short piece of the 9/16 tubing and slide it down over the 1/4 inch
tubing to act as a locking collar as well as a reinforcement. Solder it in
place on the 1/4 inch tubing if you wish.
