The disappearance of Amelia Earhart is a popular topic because her flights and exploits were publicized by her husband George Putnam:

I haven't read the books about their relationship but she was an adventerous women who loved to fly. Besides trying to get into a field dominated by men flying was (and still is) an expensive occupation. Her association with Putnam gave her the ability to fly by getting funding for these publicity stunts. George also found a great subject to publicize.

Speak of conspiracy theories, I've read the US government also backed this flight because it gave them a cover reason to set up Coast Guard assets in the Pacific to monitor the movement of Japanese shipping. Is their any evidance of this?

I know who AE was, but never gave her much thought. It appears that this  is also one of those historical events fraught with mystery and conspiracy theories, like JFK, Roswell, and Pearl Harbor.
