I know who AE was, but never gave her much thought. It appears that this  is also one of those historical events fraught with mystery and conspiracy theories, like JFK, Roswell, and Pearl Harbor.

Perhaps the simple truth is that she was a reckless barnstormer who embarked on an ill conceived adventure and her stupidity finally caught up to her. ( I hope there are no feminist reading this!)

I'm a fan of Chuck Yeager, but he was crazy too! That's why he never got into the space program.
I guess you're a hero if you live to tell the tale, but remembered as  reckless if you don't.

To add more confusion, there's this:

This shows the control unit for a WE 20-B receiver.  The actual radio was under the right seat; all the controls (tuning, gain, bandswitch etc) were connected to the head via tachshafts similar to those of the ARC-5.

Note also the telegraph key on the right side of the cockpit.

The question is, when was the photo taken?

It's known that AE left her telegraph key behind at Miami; also her trailing wire antenna.  She was obsessed with "saving weight."
