Dave,
It might have something to do with age.  I'm 72.  And I'm
pretty sure that had I seen those mods to ARC-5s when 
I was 14 or 15 years old , I would have marveled with 
envy at their work.  Most hams didn't have a lot of 
money back then, and we all looked for ways to get on 
the air on a shoe string budget....
 
Still I had to laugh at your comment.  It is apropos of how
we see and feel about the family of ARC-5/SCR-274N rigs 
today.  Yes we are horrified, but for the older crowd, not 
surprised....
