The GF/RU and SCR-183/283 do look similar; but they are VERY different.
Simply stated:
The RU receivers can "continuously" cover from 190 kc to 13.575 mc (there is a bewildering assortment of coil sets), and have a BFO for CW. The SCR-receivers basically cover 200-400 kc and 2500-4700 or 6200-7700 kc, using 2 or 3 different coil sets.
RU and SCR receiver coil sets are NOT interchangeable. The tube line-up is different also.
The SCR radios were not designed to work CW; they will work voice and tone modulated CW. The Navy radios were designed with CW as the primary mode in most cases (2-place Navy planes had the second crewman serving as radio operator) and AM was secondary.
The GF transmitter uses 837 tubes, and is suppressor grid modulated on AM. The SCR transmitters use 45 tubes in the final and as modulators; They use plate modulation. The SCR transmitter uses a Type 10 as the oscillator and (I think) speech amp. I can't remember off the top of my head what the oscillator tube in the GF transmitter is.
The GF transmitter covers, I think, about 2 to 9 mc using several coil sets. The SCR transmitter covers (I think) 3200 to 4700 and 6200-7700 kc using maybe 3 coil sets. The coils are NOT interchangeable with the GF (Navy) units.
As far as I know the control boxes, dynamotors and junction boxes are not interchangeable between the Navy and Army series.
Somewhere I have original manuals for the SCR-183/283, and RU-16/17 receiver/GF-11/12 transmitter. If I can put my hands on them (i.e. get to them!) I could answer more questions.
Many SCR sets were used in training aircraft like the BT-13 and AT-6, even after the SCR-274N came into service. The Navy used their GF/RU all through the war. I have an RU-19 receiver with a 1950 (!!!!!) overhaul date stamp on the front.

OK. So there were two "series" of pre-arc-5 equipments. I mean like the
BC-230-looking types.
One was, of course, the SCR-182/283, and the other was, I presume, the
GF.
As I understand it, they LOOK somewhat similar, but the GF was more
"capable" than the other.
In fact, as I understand it, the GF was used in many smaller Navy aircraft all
through the war, whereas the SCR-183/283 was "dumped" in favor of the
SCR-274N series quite early on.
Is there any documentation which clearly compares and details those and
their differences?
The GF seems to be MUCH more difficult to find than the SCR-183/283.
