Among the many hacked ARC-5s (generic term) I have found was a BC-946-B mounted sideways on a 19" rack panel. All covers were removed, the dial and its worm-gear drive were removed and the tuning cap. shaft was coupled directly to a National Type ACN dial on the rack panel. Of course it had an AC power supply where the dynamotor had been. Actually it worked well, the large calibrated ACN dial was easy to read, and I logged many distant MW stations with it. At present, I also have a new-in-original-box BC-946-B which I consider strictly as a collector's item. Mike-W6MAB

I wonder if the "conversion" referred to, might be the infamous "BC-946 to Hi-Fi AM Tuner" that was in either Volume 1 or Volume 2 of the Surplus Radio Perversion Manuals.
Hmm, years ago I was fortunate to find a NEW BC-946-B in its original cardboard carton, with the dynamotor and a local tuning knob which must have been shipped with it as-new. And so it has remained, except briefly when it was plugged into a rack to be checked out (worked perfectly); and so it shall remain. NFS.
