I assume it is for the same reason that the ham conversion of the VHF ARC-5 receiver says to remove all of the crystal sockets, relays and associated wiring, even though neither the space made available nor any of the hardware thus obtained either is needed for the conversion or interferes with it.

Perhaps it is just easier to say "remove ...." rather than "disconnect the red-white wire from pin 2 of the V-101 socket."

I would guess that none of those who wrote such articles were ever involved in Explosive Ordnance Disposal, or if they were, not for long.
