Carl is right and you save a 12A6 and you reduce the heat and you reduce the
filament current and the B+ current..in fact if you don't need the cw osc
you can ditch the det tube and fit an old ss diode for the detector..then
you save two tubes and still have 10W hi fi..now you have a 4 tube ARC5
rx..can anyone go down to 3 tubes?

Hello All
I am building a combined ARC5 receiver power supply and audio amplifier.
I would like to know more about the audio output from an un-modified ARC-5
family receiver.
What is the intended output impedance??? 600 Ohms?
What is the audio output power/? I know a ARC5 receiver can drive an 8 Ohm
speaker with low to moderate volume if a matching transformer is used.? I
think this means the audio power output is something like 50 mW or lower.
What is the audio voltage when operating into its intended ( headphone?)
load.
I need this information in order to properly terminate the receiver audio
out line and to set the gain of the audio amplifier i am adding to drive a
conventional speaker.
I do not have a functional receiver to test, that is why i am building the
power supply.
Thank you for your assistance....bruce?? kj3z

Need a mate for it?
I have one NOS/NIB. Think it might be Motorola.

Fellow heavy radio nuts, er?
aficionados,
I have come across a 6 volt dynamotor mounted on a
bracket/chassis with filter and relay underneath.? The
DC output is rated at 400 volts.? Weighs 12-15 pounds,
about 10 inches long.
Anyone need such a thing?

This is all in the manual, Bruce...and lots more you will need. Have you
downloaded one? If not try this one:
http://bama.edebris.com/manuals/military/an-arc5/
I could give you all that from the manual, but under the "teach a man to
fish" principle, this might be a more productive path for you,
especially, since the answer is - "it all depends...":-) See
paragraphs 1-19, 4-14, 4-27, and Table 6-3.

Excuse me, but, no! :-(
It is 400 mW, and when the impedances are properly matched, that is
enough audio output at full volume to blow the windows out of my shack, and
my windows aren't made out of SaranWrap either.
Sheesh...
I have NEVER understood why all the old conversion manuals insisted on
adding an audio preamp and a following, (supposedly) much more powerful,
amplifier. It is just plain completely un-necessary.
All that is REALLY necessary is to 1) replace the 12A6's 2 meg grid
resistor,
R-20, with a properly wired 2 meg audio-taper pot, and 2) to match the
impedances properly.

With my command receivers in my two and a half car
garage/shack/shop/music hall I have plenty of volume from a speaker to
hear the radio even when the television is playing and the windows are
open to outside noise such as the neighbor's lawn mower. It won't rattle
the windows like the 5 KW amplifier in the teenager's car - you know the
one - sounds like artillery at ten paces.

Yeah, for CW and space shuttle audio AM you dont need much fidelity, just
run the 12A6 wide open.
OTOH if you want to listen to high quality ham or BC AM then feed the
detector load into a nice preamp/PP amp of 10W or more. You benefit from
much lower distortion to begin with using PP and then run the gain control
down to a comfortable level for even lower distortion and into a quality
speaker.
