As to where each was used, I'll let someone else more knowledgeable than myself speak to that.
But when it comes to making up interconnecting cables I'll take the A version open wire or sometimes called Loom type any day. Finding the right cables with correct wire sizes, and that also look correct, would be the first monumental task.
