Many years ago, I was given an essentially never-used BC-779 with power supply. The BFO
injection level was so low that with the RF gain 1/2 open, there wasn't enough injection to
copy CW signals.
At that time, I really didn't know enough to look for a bad coupling cap or other problem, and
had no test equipment other than a VOM.
I did have access to some manuals for other equipment, and a couple of handbooks.
I modified the 6N7 noise limiter into a triode product detector I took from the manual for a
Heathkit SB-100.
The improvement in the way that receiver worked from then on was so amazing to me that I
have never forgotten it.
I used that receiver for many years afterwards as my main RTTY receiver.
It was the quietest, most sensitive receiver I had in the shack.
