[ARC5] Spotting

I am new to operating the command sets and have some questions for the list. I am building an authentic setup using dynamotors in both receivers and transmitters and have the shelving desgin to hold it all just about complete thanks to Mike (you know who you are) How did they back in the day spot the receive and transmit frequencies to each other? Did they do it live on air or was there a way 
to do it without transmitting? I am also looking for a BC348 and ART13 to go with my setup and will be in Phoenix, Az. during the week of November 19th through the 22nd in case anyone has Command sets they are looking to unload.
