I have been doing some reading about the enhanced AGC circuitry in the 
later model AN/ARC-5 receivers.

It is pretty interesting: the AGC is "delayed" by 20 (!) volts by means of 
cathode and grid resistances in the 12SF7 stage.

In other words, the AGC is completely ineffective until the RF input signal 
would pretty much blast you out of the aircraft.

Probably worthwhile in a fighter aircraft, but not particularly useful in ham 
radio service, methinks.

Oh. One more thing: this AGC is always in effect, even when the BFO is on.
