I am not sure what these fellows intended in this particular case. 

I do remember that article you mention. Actually, there were several similar 
articles by several different authors all of whom suggested doing the same 
thing.

This was especially common with the BC band receivers which were literally 
torn to shreds to build hi-fi AM tuners out of. They also ripped out the BFO 
transformers in many cases to turn the BFO stage into an audio preamp.
