As soon as I get a chance, I'll reference some data
I've found on this.
Summary- the early Wacos used a wire line to the tug
and tacked-into the tug's interphone. The glider pilots
used the J-37/AIA-1A jack box for their mike/headphone
connnections, at least in some gliders ("Wacos" were built by
several makers and had differences).
Here's the rusted remains of a J-37 box on a recovered
Waco frame:
http://www.questmasters.us/sitebuilder/images/CG-4A_J-37-AIA-1A_Box_001-678x508.jpgThis wired system was unsatisfactory and unreliable.Radio SCR-585A was installed in place of the wires. The later, abortive attempt to build a glider force for the Marine Corps had SCR-585 sets re-nomenclaturedas set "AMA."(NOTE: If you ever see AMA set serial #205,it was stolen from me several years ago in Texas). The 611-style receiver works fine the near-field ofthe 10-15 watt Command Transmitter in the Tugand for the few hundred yards on the ground needed.I have a photo here somewhere of the SCR-585Ainstalled in the gliders. One of those sets I'd hopedto build one day (dream dream dream) ;-)73 Dave S.
