S.O.S. referred to creamed chipped beef on toast and was only available
as class A or B chow. Class A was hot in a mess hall. Class B was hot
(? sometimes) transported to the field in Mermite cans. Class C was
C-rats which could be eaten after heating or eaten cold. I was never
subjected to K ration bars which were combat rations/energy bars used in
WWII and possibly in Korea. When stationed in Japan you could check out
life rafts from the base recreation center and they contained life boat
rations with K's and such exotic things such as Charms candy (like a
square lifesaver without the hole) as well as something that looked and
smelled like bacon which I never got up the nerve to try. I actually
liked some of the C-rats. The boned chicken was just like what you can
buy in any grocery store today. The steak and potatoes were good if you
cooked them. The ham and mother f**kers were allways the last items
left in the case because -nobody- wanted them especially after they (and
you) had been burning in the sun all day. If you had some Tobasco the
scrambled eggs and ham was pertty good too. The John Wayne crackers
still are the best I've ever eaten. And everybody loved the canned
peaches. The only really good desert in MRE's was the fruit cocktail
and only then if you had some 7UP to re-hydrate it with instead of
water. In later years when I was in the N.G. summer camps I'd volunteer
to take the NCOIC post over the middle weekend so the married guys could
go home for some comfort. They usually paid me in Cases of MRE's. Some
guys developed real skills in preparing C's and even MRE's. One more
thing, the plastic spoons in the C's were the best ever made.
Incredibly tough, and it would burn like a candle if you needed it to.
Man I sound like an old fart with his memories, hell I guess I am. 73
