Next time you are in the grocery store, mosey on over to the frozen food section. If they carry Stouffer's, they may stock Creamed Chipped Beef. Even has a pretty picture on the front. 0 grams trans fat to boot. Mom made this from scratch when we were kids. First step was to open the jar of Argentine beef and rinse the excess salt.

  My understanding is that USAF chow halls uses ground beef for their version of SOS and USN uses the "chipped" spicy dried thin-sliced beef which is definitely more costly! 
   
  My mother used the latter and I have HATED it since Day One! 
   
  BTW, the "shingle" is a slice of toast.
