To me, whether an audio filter is worthwhile or not depends on both the filter
and the rig you want to use it with: I have found that the CWF-2 (sold for a
while by MFJ, and now available as a kit from Vectronics as their VEC-820K)
audio filter makes an excellent addition to a Heathkit HW-16.
It contains 4 cascaded ICs and has 180 Hz, 110 Hz, and 85 Hz outputs
supplied, and 90 Hz is available if you want to add one wire.
It also provides about 3 db audio gain.
Center frequency is 750 Hz.
Runs on anything from 5 to 15 VDC.
Although you can plug it into your phone jack and then plug your phones into
it, I installed one after the detector and before the 1st audio stage in the
HW-16.
It makes a big difference when it is needed. If I have occasion to use it, I use
the 90 Hz position most of the time. To me, the 85 Hz position is a bit too
narrow.
Most of the time I leave it switched out.
