Hi Carl,
Audio filters are not the be-all, end-all panacea (even if they are at
the end). I have used the op amp based audio filters and the scaf
filters are a little nicer. I have used the DSP filters at audio and
those seem nicer but so far there are audible 'artifacts' that I can't
live with. If the front end get rid of all or even most of the audio
image then audio filters are viable.
The "knothole" should be up front as close to the antenna as possible.
For a receiver that covers an amateur band that means it should follow
the first mixer and that is NOT audio. But, I have audio filters and I
don't have filters or xtals at 1415 kc or 2830 kc (grin). I can think of
a place where I can ask about those. I'll go there next while it is on
my mind.
Maybe not 455 kc.. I do have xtals at some higher frequencies. Hmmm...
