That term was first used during WWI, I believe. It described the nightly visits 
by an enemy aircraft.

The Japanese did this regularly in the Pacific at some U.S. airfields. Since 
the Japanese often used twin-engined bombers with un-synchronized 
engines, they were also called "Washing Machine Charlie".
