Both are correct statements: however, at least part of the "short-range" issue 
was due to very marginal antennas, especially in fighter aircraft, which were 
not much better in bombers.

And remember that the military wanted 100% (or as close as they could get 
to it) reliable comms. Thus the "short-range" limitation.

After all, hams have worked the world with "QRP" stations.

I have used an SMK-1 transceiver, which is the size of a cigarette pack, to 
work all up and down the west U.S. coast and down into Texas. Power 
output is 300 mW. But I sure as heck couldn't do that with 100% reliability 
either.

And as far as the receivers being "broad", yes, but many of us have a pretty 
good 50 Hz filter between our ears which works well for CW.
